Roman Reigns has been capturing the Universal Title since 2020 summer and that title was further clubbed with the WWE Title in 2022 to form the Undisputed Championship which solidified his top-most status in the company.
In the latest, Roman Reigns retained the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in a Fatal-4-Way match against Randy Orton, LA Knight, and AJ Styles at Royal Rumble 2024 which was his biggest title defense of his entire title reign.

Orton had the match won after delivering an RKO to Roman, but Solo Sikoa pulled the referee out of the ring during the pinfall to prevent him from winning. Reigns ultimately pinned Styles after a Spear to win the match.
On that same night, Cody Rhodes won the 2024 Men's Royal Rumble match by eliminating CM Punk in the end. Once the match was over, Cody pointed toward Roman Reigns and confirmed that he was coming for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
Roman isn't performing at Elimination Chamber in February and as indicated by The American Nightmare during the post-Rumble press conference, he's coming for The Tribal Chief in the main event of WrestleMania 40.
Speaking of this match, TheWrestlingBlog reported the following about the possibility of Roman Reigns possibly dropping the WWE Championship at WrestleMania if the rematch from last year ends up happening, after all.
"There's a good amount of support for the idea of Roman Reigns losing the title at WrestleMania 40, as the feeling is that a lot of the rivalries that WWE has left for Roman Reigns don't need the title moving forward."
Also on this week's episode of Raw, Seth Rollins tried to convince Cody Rhodes so that he could face him for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40, and Cody said he'll think about it.
Rollins questioned Rhodes' ethics of what kind of champion he wanted to be with the likes of The Ultimate Warrior and Ric Flair. Seth also mentioned the WWE Championship as the Hulk Hogan title while the World Heavyweight Championship was noted as the Dusty Rhodes title.
According to the reports of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE wants to create a pop angle when Cody will ultimately make his WrestleMania decision, "The idea is they can build up for a week or two and pop a big rating for Cody's decision."
