Bengaluru, March 17: Earlier this month, WWE dropped a blockbuster announcement regarding another international event in the form of Backlash 2023, the first pay-per-view/premium live event following WrestleMania 39.

The 2023 edition of Backlash will be held in San Juna, Puerto Rico at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, on Saturday, May 6. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns is being promoted for the event as the potential headliner.

This wipes out the rumours that the top champion will be on a hiatus following WrestleMania 39, no matter whether he remains the champion or not. Besides, a reliable source also indicates that he is eventually being planned for a mega title match at the May PLE.

According to the reports of Xero News, WWE is nurturing the two below options for the potential Main Event matches at WWE Backlash 2023.

- Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship or just the WWE Championship

- The Bloodline (Roman Reigns & The Usos) vs. Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn in a Six-Man Tag Team Match

From this scenario, it's unclear whether Roman Reigns will still be holding the undisputed title after WrestleMania 39 or not. While betting odds are favoring Cody Rhodes to be the new champion, the insider belief is that WWE's Tribal Chief will find a way to retain.

Besides, the return of the WWE Draft is possibly scheduled around WWE Backlash 2023 in May 2023, causing the top world titles to be split, one each for Raw and Smackdown and thereby creating more competition for the WWE Superstars.

At present, the following superstars are being advertised to appear at Backlash:

- Roman Reigns

- Cody Rhodes

- Edge

- The Usos

- Street Profits

- Becky Lynch

- Gunther

- Seth Rollins

- Drew McIntyre

- Sheamus

- Bianca Belair

- Charlotte Flair

- Judgment Day's Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, and Dominik Mysterio

WWE has also revealed that Backlash won't be the only show in Puerto Rico that weekend. The night before the PLE, the March 5 episode of Friday Night Smackdown will take place at the same arena in San Juan.

Grammy award-winning rapper and former WrestleMania competitor Bad Bunny was previously announced as the host of Backlash. However, nothing has been said about the celebrity star appearing on SmackDown.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez also revealed that WWE has discussed holding an episode of Monday Night Raw in Puerto Rico but nothing has been finalized, as of this writing.

"There is discussion to hold RAW in Puerto Rico as well, but we'll just see what they end up doing."
