What are the WWE Championship matches post-Summerslam phase?

By: Raja

Bengaluru, Aug 24: It was a spectacular Summerslam event in Brooklyn, New York, last Sunday (August 21), which marked the 29th anniversary of the biggest event of the summer.

The match card was stacked with some solid bouts and featured tow championship matches. The first one saw the reigning WWE World Champion, Dean Ambrose defending his title against Dolph Ziggler. The other one was for the brand new WWE Universal Championship match featuring Seth Rollins and Finn Balor.

Dean Ambrose, current WWE World Champion

WWE Raw got Finn Balor's alter ego, Demon King, as the first-ever WWE Universal Championship holder. However, fans ended up hearing the sad news, the next night at the beginning of the show.

Finn Balor suffered a dislocated shoulder at the Summerslam match against Seth Rollins. Hence he had to relinquish his title at the hands of Raw general manager and commissioner, Stephanie McMahon.

So, there were some qualifying matches on Raw to determine 4 participants who are going to feature at the fatal-4-way match at next week's WWE Raw. We will see a new champion crowning on WWE's flagship show, next week.

On the other hand, from Smackdown, after a hard-fought battle, the show-off Dolph Ziggler failed to capture the WWE World Heavyweight championship from the reigning champion, Dean Ambrose, at Summerslam. So, the question before the start of Tuesday's (August 23) hottest show was who is going to be the next challenger for Ambrose's title.

AJ Styles came up with the claim that since he has beaten John Cena at Summerslam, he's the new face who runs the place. Hence, he is the automatic choice for the number one contender's spot.

However, the Smackdown General Manager, Daniel Bryan had something else in his mind and made a match between Styles and Ziggler, to determine who is going to face Dean Ambrose for the WWE World title at the Backlash PPV (September 11).

A particular stipulation was added to the match, if Styles wins he will get a one-on-one championship match. However, if Ziggler wins the match will be turned into a triple threat match. After a hard-fought encounter, Styles blocked the superkick from Ziggler and hit the Styles Clash to claim the one-on-one match against Ambrose at Backlash PPV for the WWE World title.
