"The Biggest Little Man" in the history of professional wrestling will now simply be known as a WWE Hall of Famer.
As seen on this week’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown on FOX, Rey Mysterio has officially been announced as the first inductee of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
Before this week’s blue brand edition, WWE didn’t give any information regarding the inductees of this year’s Hall of Fame set for Wrestlemania 39 weekend. Since the Show of Shows is emanating from Hollywood, movie star Batista was rumoured as the first-ballot inductee.
But the already postponed induction for the firmer six-time world champion could have been pushed back, again. But as a replacement, WWE will now showcase one of his previous tag team partner cum rivals, Rey Mysterio.
No one really deserves the Hall of Fame induction more than the Master of 619 who’s been in the industry for nearly 25 years to leave a legacy like nobody else.
Starting from 2002, Rey won a number of gold including the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, United States Championship, Intercontinental Championship, Cruiserweight Championship, and various versions of WWE Tag Team Championships.
The high-flyer also won the 2006 Royal Rumble on his way en route to his first world title win. He is also a Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion in the WWE who worked in companies like WCW, NWA, ECW, AAA, CMLL, NJPW, and more.
Overall, the 21st Grand Slam Champion in the WWE last held a title at WrestleMania Backlash in 2021 by capturing the SmackDown Tag Team Championships alongside Dominik.
Thus, they became the first-ever father-son duo in WWE history to have become tag team champions. At this point, the two are engaged in a highly personal feud that got worse after the Hall of Fame announcement.
Rey came out to the ring for a promo session after this, but before he could make a statement, Dominik Mysterio came out with Judgment Day members and verbally blasted the latest WWE Hall of Famer.
Dominik noted how he was ashamed to be his son. Legado del Fansasma then came out to set up a six-man tag team match against Judgment Day which the latter duo ended up winning.
Dominik got the pin-fall win over Cruz Del Toro after which he continued taking verbal jabs at Rey, trying to fire him up for a fight. The legendary Masked Luchador eventually sent Dominik out of the ring to end the segment.
Going by this storyline, it’s evident that Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio are on a collision course and the mega father-son duel should be confirmed at Wrestlemania Hollywood set for April 1 and 2 in Inglewood, California.
