Bengaluru, March 3: All the past backlash regarding the collaboration of WWE and The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia couldn't end their 10-year agreement.
The Saudis are not only the favorites to take over WWE in the future but they are also reportedly bringing back the popular King of the Ring event.
According to the previous reports of Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics in a Patreon-exclusive video, WWE Backlash premium live event is scheduled on May 6, marking the first WWE Network Specials following WrestleMania 39.
The source also noted that King and Queen of the Ring tournaments will also be presented as a WWE premium live event on May 27. While the location of the PLE wasn't stated, Backlash was said to be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In an update, PWInsider via Wrestling Headlines has now informed that the WWE King and Queen of The Ring are rather scheduled to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia instead of Backlash. Roman Reigns is expected to be the main-eventer of this show.
Jeddah is the second-largest as well as the main resort city in the Kingdom, indicating WWE will have a good time in terms of selling out the event. The exact location for the upcoming PLE wasn't revealed by the source.
WWE has previously held two events in Jeddah, the Greatest Royal Rumble 2018 and Super ShowDown 2019, at the King Abdullah International Stadium with both the events having part-time superstars as headliners.
Last year, WWE Elimination Chamber PLE ran from Jeddah from the newly opened Jeddah Super Dome. After that in the Fall, the yearly tradition Crown Jewel returned from the Mrsool Park in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia audience loves the old-school feel of WWE programming and putting back the King and Queen of the Ring into the PLE schedule could be a welcoming step. If the above reports are any indications then it will be the second PLE in May.
King of the Ring was an annual pay-per-view tradition in the WWE calendar from 1993 to 2002. The tournament was hosted in 2021, as well but hosting a titular PLE under this gimmick will be a first-time occurrence since 2002.
Interestingly, the 2021 King of the Ring tourney came along with the Queen of the Ring version, namely Queen's Crown tournament, and both the finale matches were hosted in Crown Jewel PLE in Saudi Arabia.
At present, WWE has four premium live events officially announced for 2023 followed by next year's WrestleMania details. The confirmed PLE schedule goes as follows:
- WWE Money in the Bank (July 1 from the O2 Arena in London, England)
- WWE SummerSlam (August 5 from the Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan)
- WWE NXT Stand & Deliver (April 1 from the Crypto.com Arena in California, Los Angeles)
- WWE WrestleMania 39 (April 1/2 from the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California)
- WWE WrestleMania 40 (April 6/7 from the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
