WWE NXT: Dominik successfully defends Title despite Rey Mysterio’s presence

Bengaluru, August 9: The latest episode of WWE NXT witnessed a main event match over the NXT North American Championship as the reigning titleholder, Dominik Mysterio defended against the challenger, Dragon Lee, and emerged successful.

A few weeks ago, Dominik had a verbal altercation with Dragon Lee, backstage at NXT's latest bygone premium live event, The Great American Bash, last month. Dom referred Lee to as a "wannabe Rey Mysterio" to begin the feud.

Due to the tense interaction, Lee eventually managed to secure the legendary Rey Mysterio, Dominik's father in his corner for their title match set for last night's NXT but Dom's girlfriend Rhea Ripley again turned out to be the difference maker.

At one point, Dominik and Lee were lying in the ring when the only-female Judgment Day member passed the North American Title belt in the ring but Rey grabbed it and prohibited Dom from using it.

This eventually allowed Ripley to strike Lee in the back of his head with the Women's World Championship as Dom quickly followed up with a Michinoku Driver to secure the pin-fall win in what marked his overall fifth title defense.

The drama continued to unfold after the match as Ripley and Dominik confronted Rey Mysterio. Ripley also goaded Rey while protecting Dom from his father. This led Lyra Valkyria to come out and attack Ripley from behind.

Eventually, Lee was back on his feet and pounced on Dom from behind with an attack. Dom and Ripley ultimately opted to retreat from the ring while Lee, Rey, and Valkyria stood tall in the ring to end the show.

It appears the altercation will set up some sort of singles or mixed tag matchups on NXT especially with NXT Heatwave waiting within two weeks from now. Lyra has already faced Ripley, two weeks ago to begin an impromptu feud.

With her being focused on Ripley, a rematch is certainly expected while a mixed tag team match can't also be ruled out. Rey is out of action with an injury which would probably force Lee to team up with Lyra against Dom and Ripley.

Speaking of Heatwave, the first match for the show was announced after Ilja Dragunov challenged Trick Williams for a match as the latter cost him a title match opportunity at NXT Great American Bash.
