Bengaluru, March 8: The tradition of hosting the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal started back in 2014, when Hulk Hogan returned to the WWE before that year's Wrestlemania to announce about this innovative contest. Like the Royal Rumble, even this contest features 30 superstars, who compete in an over the top rope challenge.
This match was primarily targetted for younger talents on the roster who were not involved in big Wrestlemania singles matches. By winning this contest, they used to grab attention from the fans to elevate their career. Associating Andre the Giant's name with this match meant so much to the stars competing in the contest.
While the concept was satisfying to the critics as well as the audience, the implementation was not so good. Cesaro was the inaugral winner and has till date not reached the main-event spot. The same can be said for the next three winners as well who are Big Show, Baron Corbin, and Mojo Rawley.
As reported by PWInsider.com, WWE officials will have big plans for this year's winner. He will be given a huge push in his career, unlike his predecessors. The reason behind the same is a documentary on Andre the Giant on HBO is coming soon.
During the Royal Rumble PPV telecast, a promo of the same was shown to confirm that HBO Network will air the programme during the Wrestlemania season. Since, its prime focus will be on the legendary career of the gigantic persona of Andre, WWE wants to be a part of it by paying homage to the eighth wonder of the world.
Check out more updates on the same from SportsKeeda.com,
“This year's winner will be given a huge push because the Battle Royal will coincide with the release of the new documentary about the WWE Hall of Famer.
The company is aware that if the documentary receives good ratings, it could lead to more projects with HBO and Bill Simmons, who is reportedly a huge WWE fan and the man behind the camera for the upcoming release.”
