WWE Raw: Former champions return; Reigning champion sidelined with ACL tear

Bengaluru, August 8: Heading into WWE Raw, one of the major spoilers suggested the return of legendary former WWE Tag Team Champion, The New Day and that appeared to be true as two-third members of the group indeed showed up.

On the post-SummerSlam episode of Monday Night Raw, The Viking Raiders - Erik and Ivar issued a challenge to the backstage members of the roster to accept a challenge and face them in a match.

Little did they have imagined that The New Day - Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston would come out to accept the challenge and defeat them in a tag match with ease in a renewed rivalry from last year on SmackDown.

In a further development on Raw, The New Day also appeared in a backstage interview with Jackie Redmond and said they're coming for the Tag Team Championship, currently held by the team of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.

At present, Owens is out of action on Raw due to an injury and this is the reason that the tag titles couldn't be defended at SummerSlam. There's no update on how long it would take to nurse the injury.

The Raw returnee Kingston has also been sidelined for months due to an ankle injury and his last match took place back in February on SmackDown against LA Knight. Woods last digested a loss to Dominik Mysterio on a May episode of Raw.

As for the remaining member of The New Day, Big E broke his neck in March 2022 to be taken off TV. He has since had neck fusion surgery, but doctors advised him to never wrestle again. WWE may now consider him in a non-wrestling role.

Moving from one tag team to another, one-half of the reigning WWE Women's Tag Team Champions have been injured to ironically prove the myth of these titles being cursed, once again.

As already reported by different outlets, Sonya Deville confirmed her injury on social media. She has suffered an ACL tear, and it would take surgery to heal the wound. Here's more on what Sonya had to offer.

"As all of you probably already know and heard, I've torn my left ACL last week on SmackDown in my match against Bianca and Charlotte. Obviously, I will be out for an extended period of time due to the fact that I have to get surgery."

This essentially means that the other half of the Women's Tag Team Champions, Chelsea Green would have to relinquish the belt in the absence of her partner, meaning injury reasons will again cause changes to the women's tag title program.
