WWE Smackdown: Career celebration; Title Match and more announced

WWE is famous for throwing celebrations for the Legends of the pro-wrestling industry and one such occasion will go down, next week in honor of bonafide first-ballot Hall of Famer who’s still active when it comes to in-ring competition.

As noted on this week’s Smackdown, WWE Hall of Famer Edge’s 25th anniversary in the company will be celebrated, two weeks from now on the August 18 episode that takes place from his hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Scotiabank Arena.

Edge

While the 11-time WWE World Champion has long been shifted to Ashville, North Carolina in the United States, he has always been billed from his root, Toronto, and given his history with this city, it’s fitting that a homage will be reserved, there.

Back in the late 90s, Edge made his debut in the WWE and quickly rose to prominence as one of the most talented wrestlers of his time. After being a mid-carder in the initial phase, he won Money in the Bank briefcase in 2005 that changed his career.

As The Rated-R Superstar, he ended up winning the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship several times. In total, he had won 31 championships in his career which is more than any superstar in history.

Since returning from the once career-ending injury in 2020, Edge has been a part-timer on WWE TV, and that stint continues. There was a rumour about him possibly retiring on the latest upcoming episode in Toronto.

However, appearing on the Grayson Waller talk-show, last month on Smackdown, he clarified that he’s not hanging up the boots, anytime soon. That being said, it’s still not clear how WWE plans to use Edge in his hometown.

Moving on from Edge, a United States Championship match has been announced for next week’s Smackdown where the title-holder Austin Theory will defend against LWO member Santos Escobar who won an Invitational to secure the shot.

Last week, Escobar defeated Legendary Rey Mysterio in a match that ended via Doctor’s Stoppage after the latter had a scary bump on the head. The US Title Match was originally expected to take place at Summerslam but it was thereby postponed.

Also, on Smackdown August 11 episode, the rivalry between AJ Styles and Karrion Kross will likely be wrapped up when these two meet in the ring in a singles contest. Next week’s match card from Calgary, Alberta, Canada goes as follows:

- United States Title: Austin Theory vs. Santos Escobar

- AJ Styles vs. Karrion Kross
