WWE SmackDown: Edge to announce surprise retirement on August 18 Episode?

Bengaluru, August 16: The August episode of WWE SmackDown is scheduled to pay homage to Hall of Famer Edge on the occasion of his 25th anniversary but eventually, the show might play host to the final match of his illustrious career.

The upcoming episode of SmackDown will take place at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada which serves as the hometown of Edge. For all the right reasons, WWE booked him to have a celebration in that city.

Apart from the celebration, Edge also announced through an appearance on the August 11 SmackDown episode from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada about choosing Sheamus as his opponent in a match for the 25-year anniversary celebration.

Sheamus is someone who never faced Edge in a one-on-one capacity and this match could eventually turn out to be the latter's final match if a recent report is to go by.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Edge's longtime friend and trainer, Ron Hutchinson implied that this upcoming match against Sheamus in his hometown will be the last of The Rated R Superstar's illustrious career.

"Ron Hutchinson, who is Edge's trainer and has known Edge for 30 years, he basically said that this is Edge's last match. They certainly did not [build it up like that]. But that was interesting where he said it's probably - it's most likely Edge's last match," Meltzer said.

It should be noted that a year ago in Toronto, Edge expressed his desire to retire in Toronto in 2023 summer. Meltzer noted in his report that Edge thought that Summerslam was going to take place in this town.

That would have created a perfect opportunity for the eleven-time world champion to hang up the boots for good but that wasn't the case. The August 18 episode should rather work as a replacement opportunity to bid goodbye.

Originally, Edge was forced into retirement following WrestleMania 27 in April 2011 due to a neck concussion. However, the Toronto native found his way back to the WWE and in competition in January 2020 at the Royal Rumble.

The multi-time world champion admittedly reached the finishing point of his career in recent times and this week's SmackDown could indeed mark his permanent retirement. WWE Universe is thereby advised to be prepared for a heart-wrenching moment.
