WWE Smackdown: New Champion crowned; Top Superstar leaves company

Bengaluru, August 13: The culmination of the United States Championship Invitational ended up crowning a new titleholder on this week's WWE SmackDown. Legendary Rey Mysterio has now become the new champion with the prestigious belt in a surprising set of altercations.

The original number-one contender for the title, Santos Escobar was getting interviewed backstage on SmackDown when he got attacked by United States Champion Austin Theory. Moments later, it was shown that Escobar injured his knee due to the attack.

Despite having the ruptured knee, Escobar made his way out to the ring for the match, only to be attacked by Theory, again in the knee. WWE doctors would ultimately disqualify Escobar from getting into any kind of action.

Out came Rey Mysterio to a thunderous ovation from the WWE SmackDown audience as he opted to give proxy for his LWO cohort Santos Escobar in the title bout and the impromptu match was approved.

Eventually, Mysterio nailed Theory with his pendant 619 followed by the Frogsplash to clinch the victory and win the United States Title for the third time in his career ending Theory's reign of 258 days.

Two weeks ago on SmackDown, in the United States Title Invitational, Santos Escobar defeated Rey Mysterio via Doctor's Stoppage to become the Number-One Contender for the title. The Master of 619 was hurt after digesting a nasty head bump on the floor.

The doctors determined that the WWE Hall of Famer couldn't continue in the competition which also caused an injury scare around him. But his imminent return to action and the title win will assure his global fanbase about his health.

In more news from SmackDown, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Paul Heyman, and Solo Sikoa were present on the main event segment to have a conversation with Jimmy Uso for his unprecedented help at SummerSlam.

Jimmy wanted nothing in return from Roman but rather confronted Jey Uso to inform him that he didn't want Jey to become corrupt like Roman after becoming The Tribal Chief by winning the Tribal Combat at SummerSlam.

Jey didn't buy and ignored a hug from Jimmy after which the latter left the ring. Roman then ordered Jey to acknowledge him in return to which he ended up receiving a Superkick. Solo went after Jey, but he got superkicked, too.

Jey finally put down Roman with a superkick and a Spear of his own before calling out Jimmy and superkick him in the face. He then looked at the camera and informed that he was leaving WWE to close SmackDown.

Reports suggest that WWE wants Jimmy vs. Jey Uso matchup to happen at WrestleMania 40 by slowly unfolding the story and that's what they might do by keeping the latter off SmackDown for the time being in a kayfabe manner.
