WWE Smackdown: Possible spoiler on Championship Unification and future plans

Two weeks ago on the weekly episode of Smackdown, WWE ended up shocking the fans by announcing that they will be merging the main roster Women’s Tag Team Titles and NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles.

Starting from tonight’s Smackdown onward, there will be only one set of Women’s Tag Team Champions in the WWE. A Championship Unification match will go down after which the winners could be awarded a new set of belts, as well.

NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn will collide against the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler on this week’s Smackdown to determine the new unified champs.

According to earlier updates from insider source BWE, titles are being unified due to WWE President Nick Khan’s vision where he sees NXT as the legitimate third brand of the WWE and not just a developmental brand.

Nick wants more main roster superstars to appear on Tuesday Night NXT and it’s a no-brainer that he would also want Ronda Rousey to make a few future appearances on NXT as the tag champ to boost up the show’s viewership.

That being said, the team of Rousey and Baszler are solid favourites heading into Smackdown to become the new unified champions. Afterwards, they should soon be scheduled to make crossover appearances on NXT.

In the latest episode of NXT, the World Heavyweight Championship from the Raw brand was defended in the main event where the champion Seth Rollins retained against Bron Breakker. Three more main roster superstars were also in attendance.

Next week as the Gold Rush 2023 edition continues, another main roster name Baron Corbin will challenge Carmelo Hayes for the NXT Championship signaling that such crossovers will gradually increase and some top superstars will be booked for such appearances.

Ronda Rousey, being mainstream attention, will add great value to NXT programming. Teaming up with Baszler, she picked up the women’s tag team titles on the May 29 episode of Raw by winning a Fatal-4-Way Match.

Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn defeated Kiana James and Fallon Henley in April to become the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships. They will now be touted as the final women’s tag champs on the NXT roster.

WWE Smackdown June 23 episode takes place at The Cajundome on the South Campus of the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana. The confirmed match card for the upcoming episode is given below:

- LA Knight vs. Rey Mysterio

- Shotzi vs. Bayley (Bayley’s Money in the Bank spot will be on the line)

- Cameron Grimes vs. Baron Corbin

- Women’s Tag Team Championship Unification Match: WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler vs. NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn.
