WWE Smackdown: Rey Mysterio reportedly suffers head injury after scary bump

What appeared to be an initial injury storyline to let his LWO ally have a bye to a championship match, has now turned out to be a legit one for Rey Mysterio and he could be out for weeks if not months.

The final match of the United States Title invitational went down on this week’s Smackdown where Santos Escobar defeated his fellow LWO member Rey Mysterio via Doctor’s Stoppage to become the new Number-One Contender for the United States Championship.

The match went down as planned until Escobar connected with a suicide dive to Mysterio on the floor. Even at that point, there was no sign of an injury as the show went to a commercial since nothing unusual was noticed.

After Smackdown returned from the commercial, the match was stopped and a doctor was examining Mysterio at ringside. Replays from the suicide dive showed the back of Mysterio's head contacting the floor in a bad way.

The referee eventually called off the match and Escobar was declared to be the winner. Mysterio stood up and congratulate Escobar while he also received the respect back from the fellow Mexican.

WRKD Wrestling tweeted out to update the fans about the scary incident on Smackdown to inform that Rey Mysterio wasn’t really injured, “For those concerned, Rey Mysterio’s injury on #SmackDown is a storyline.”

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful also echoed the same kayfabe concept following the match but that tweet has since been deleted. Sapp further noted that Mysterio's injury being a storyline was published due to "conflicting information."

During Fightful's post-Smackdown broadcast Sapp and some others were told whether the injury was initially determined to be a kayfabe, it wasn't that easy of a situation. An apparent head injury is being speculated at this moment.

As we wait for further concrete updates regarding the WWE Hall of Famer, Escobar will move into the United States Championship match scheduled for him within two weeks of time after overcoming his colleague and mentor.

On the August 11 episode of Smackdown, the United States Champion Austin Theory will defend his title against Escobar in what will be the first-ever solo championship opportunity for the challenger.
