WWE Smackdown: Title Unification and new Women’s Championship Match announced

On an eventful episode of Smackdown, a brand new WWE Women’s Championship was unveiled in the light of a mega return. Plus, it was also announced that there will be only one set of Women’s Tag Team Titles in WWE, moving forward.

Following the opening match of Smackdown’s June 9 episode on FOX, interviewer Kayla Braxton introduced NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn for a conversation as they’re now members of the blue brand.

Soon after, WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler interrupted the segment. Ronda straight-up said that since women’s tag division isn’t big enough they want to take over Alba & Isla’s NXT tag division, too.

Baszler revisited the history of the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship and claimed the titles only exist because of her before finally laying down a challenge for a championship unification match which was quickly accepted.

Shortly after, a brawl went down between the two pair of champions after which WWE officially announced Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler vs. Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn for the unified WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship on the June 23 episode.

Rousey and Baszler won the vacant women’s tag team titles on the May 29 episode of Raw by winning a Fatal-4-Way encounter. Fyre and Dawn defeated Kiana James and Fallon Henley in April to become the NXT women’s tag champs.

Speaking of champions, the greatest of all time in WWE Women’s division history has finally returned during this week’s Smackdown from her hiatus and she’s coming straight after the reintroduced WWE Women’s Championship.

Over on Smackdown, WWE Official Adam Pearce presented Asuka with the new WWE Women’s Championship (replacing the Raw Women’s Championship). Before she could place the belt on Asuka’s waist, Charlotte Flair came out, making her return to WWE.

In her first appearance since dropping the Smackdown Women’s Title to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 39, Flair quickly informed Pearce that she wasn’t wasting any time in going after the belt he just presented to Asuka.

Flair then challenged Asuka to a title match and the challenge was accepted. Afterward, WWE officially announced Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair for the Women’s Championship on the June 30 episode of Smackdown.

This episode takes place just a night before the 2023 Money in the Bank PLE. Bianca Belair wasn’t happy with Pearce making this match, official as she was already in line for a championship rematch against Asuka.

There’s still a chance that the upcoming Women’s Championship match could include Bianca and become a triple threat. Bianca lost the title to Asuka at Night of Champions PLE after the latter used the green mist on her face.
