WWE SmackDown: Women’s Tag Team Titles vacated; Update on new champions

Bengaluru, May 20: In what seemed an expected move following an injury scare from earlier this week, women's tag team championships in the WWE don't have any holders, coming out of the latest episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

Since one-half of the former reigning champions, Liv Morgan suffered an injury last week, she and Raquel Rodriguez were unable to defend their tag team titles against Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville on Raw.

Initially, the reports claimed that Morgan's injury isn't that much fatal and she could be back within a few weeks' time. However, it turned out to be much more serious and WWE eventually had to vacate those titles.

WWE SmackDown commentator Michael Cole announced on last night's blue brand show that Liv Morgan isn't cleared to compete due to the injury suffered during a title defense against DAMAGE CTRL, last week.

As a result, Liv and Raquel Rodriguez were forced to vacate the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship. However, Raquel can again compete for the titles after finding a new tag team partner.

On the May 29 episode of Raw, the following Fatal-4-Way match will crown the new WWE Women's Tag Team Champions: Raquel Rodriguez & TBA vs. Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler vs. Damage CTRL (Bayley & IYO SKY) vs. Chelsea Green & Sonya Deville.

In the absence of Liv, Raquel faced and defeated Chelsea Green in a singles match on Raw. After the match, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler returned and attacked Raquel on the ramp.

This was Ronda and Shayna's first appearance on WWE TV since WrestleMania 39 where they won a Women's Showcase Tag Team Match which keep them ahead of their opponent to become the new tag team champions.

Earlier reports suggested that Rousey and Baszler were originally planned to win the titles at WrestleMania 39, itself. However, Rousey's injury forced WWE to scrap those plans and let her stay in a protected state via the Women's Showcase match.

Liv and Raquel won the women's tag team titles on the April 10 episode of Raw by defeating Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus (competing on behalf of the actual champion Lita who was injured).

At this point, it appears Ronda and Baszler are the favorites to become new champions but at the same time, Ronda's reportedly set to take more time off WWE programme which might cause changes to WWE's creative plans.
