WWE SummerSlam 2024: Big match featuring CM Punk might have been changed

For months now, CM Punk has been sidelined from WWE in-ring competition due to a triceps injury that he picked up during a physical confrontation with Drew McIntyre at January's Royal Rumble match but that didn't keep him away from TV.

The Second City Saint was kept in the spotlight through his feud with Drew McIntyre, targeting a matchup at SummerSlam between the two in early August. However, plans around that bout could have changed following this week's episode of Monday Night Raw.

On the July 8 episode of WWE's flagship program, CM Punk delivered a promo and urged Adam Pearce to lift McIntyre's suspension so that a potential clash between the two could finally happen inside the squared circle.

The segment took a turn when Seth Rollins made an interference and picked a fight with Punk for costing Rollins' chance at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship by helping Damian Priest to retain at Money in the Bank.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE might have just opted to go with a triple threat at SummerSlam 2024 involving CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, and Seth Rollins.

Meltzer noted that while a singles match between Punk and McIntyre was initially planned, the sudden intense buildup around the Punk vs. Rollins angle might have scrapped the singles contest, especially with SummerSlam waiting around three weeks from now.

The source further commented that the possibility of this match happening depends on the availability of CM Punk in the first place for SummerSlam as he's yet to be medically cleared by the WWE doctors.

"It's probably happening but he did kind of say that it's up to other people to get cleared and everything by the doctors and they may - I was pretty much told that they are pretty confident but they can't go and say 100 percent."

Time will tell if Punk gets ready to feature in action in time for SummerSlam on August 3rd and if he will end up facing both Rollins and McIntyre in a triple threat in a marquee match on the show.

For the time being, McIntyre is scheduled to be on the July 15 edition of Monday Night Raw, next week to have a meeting with the GM Adam Pearce where his reinstatement on the roster will be discussed.
