Bengaluru, February 27: Being a marquee attraction on the WWE female roster, Ronda Rousey was always locked in to perform in a big match at WrestleMania 39 but plans around her kept on changing.
As it stands, the former women's championship is reportedly being booked to face a legendary name, a pitch that also calls for a title change.
Months ago, Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch dream match was on the card for WrestleMania but it was changed to Ronda Rousey vs. Rhea Ripley for the SmackDown Women's Championship. That match was scrapped after Charlotte Flair won the title.
The new plan called for Rousey and her buddy Shayna Baszler to go after Dakota Kai and IYO SKY of DAMAGE CTRL for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships. However, this match is also said to be off the card.
With Becky Lynch and Lita challenging Dakota and IYO SKY for the titles this week on Raw, the fan theory suggests that WWE might eventually book them to become the new champions so that Rousey and Baszler can challenge them at the Show of Shows.
Even Wrestling Observer reports that the originally planned women's tag title match was internally converted into a new lineup featuring Lynch and Lita since it will be a bigger draw.
"Shayna Baszler & Ronda Rousey will challenge for the Women's Tag Titles. It was originally against IYO SKY & Dakota Kai, the champions. But Lita & Becky Lynch face Sky & Kai, and WrestleMania is about marquee matches and Lita & Lynch as a team against Baszler & Rousey is a bigger match."
Another indication for the title change came after WWE abruptly canceled Trish Stratus' return to Raw, last week. She was scheduled to be a part of the ongoing storyline from her home country of Canada but then she left the show without making a TV appearance.
Ronda Rousey dropped the SmackDown Women's Championship to Charlotte Flair on the December 30 episode of SmackDown and since then she's been eyeing the women's tag team championships.
After a brief hiatus, The Baddest Woman on the Planet returned to WWE programming, earlier this month and aligned herself with Shayna Baszler. Teasing their intention to go after the tag titles, Rousey took to Twitter to address the women's tag team division in WWE.
"Apparently the entirety of the Smackdown tag division is @NatbyNature plus whatever poor soul she can recruit to her lost cause this week. #USOs defend their title every week, #DamageCNTRL has defended like twice in 6 months. What the hell is going on here?"
The statement came after Rousey and Baszler had a physical altercation with Natalya and Tegan Nox on SmackDown this past week. The two former UFC athletes are also booked to compete in a tag team match with the babyface team, this Friday Night on SmackDown.
As seen in the tweet, DAMAGE CTRL was also called out for rarely defending the Women's Tag Team Championships on television. The team leader Bayley was offended and she fired back at Rousey.
"Please spell the champs name right. And then show up to some live events and watch them defend the tag titles weekly."
Following this Twitter war, Ronda Rousey is also being locally advertised to make an appearance on tonight's Raw from the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It'll be interesting to see whether she actually makes a TV appearance to set up the speculated title match at WrestleMania 39.
