For weeks now, WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has been searching for a challenger for his title at WrestleMania 39 but now it appears that he’s got challenger(s) for his maiden outing at the Biggest Event of the Year.

Last week on Smackdown, Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus vs. LA Knight vs. Karrion Kross vs. Xavier Woods in a fatal-5-way went down with the winner earning a title shot being the stipulation. However, McIntyre and Sheamus pinned LA and Woods at the same time which never produced any outcome.

Then last night, WWE booked McIntyre vs. Sheamus in an Intercontinental Championship Qualifying Match capacity. It ended in a DQ when Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci of Imperium attacked them, leading to an unprecedented finish to the match.

WWE Official Adam Pearce then appeared on the big screen to announce a Triple Threat match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 39 where GUNTHER will have to defend against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a No-DQ environment.

The former NXT UK Champion has been holding the Intercontinental Title more than anyone else in this century starting from last year’s June when he defeated Ricochet for the title. The Wrestlemania 39 title defence is likely to be his toughest one.

In more announcements around the Show of Shows coming out of this week’s Smackdown, commentator Wade Barrett noted that two Fatal-4-Way tag team matches, one each from men's and women’s divisions will be on the show.

In the first qualifier for the same on Smackdown, Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez defeated the team of Tegan Nox and Emma to punch their tickets to Wrestlemania 39, with Morgan picking up the pin-fall over Emma via Oblivion finisher.

While there’re no confirmations, chances are high that Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler will be one of the four teams instead of them directly challenging the Women’s Tag Team Champions Becky Lynch & WWE Hall of Famer Lita.

Specific stakes for the upcoming Fatal-4-Ways are yet to be announced. It’s also not clear when and how the men’s division tag match participants will be confirmed.

WWE Wrestlemania 39 Premium Live Event goes down on Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The updated match card following Smackdown goes as follows:
