Akzhol Makhmudov Biography

He pursued higher education in law at the Kyrgyz State Law Academy in Bishkek. Despite his academic commitments, his dedication to wrestling never wavered. He currently represents Dordoi, a club based in Bishkek, under the guidance of his personal coach, Meirambek Akhmetov.

Achievements and Awards

His list of accolades is impressive. He received the 2022 Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year award from United World Wrestling (UWW) Asia. Additionally, he was named among the 2022 UWW History Makers of the Year. In 2021, he was honoured as the Best Male Athlete in Olympic Sports at the Sports Awards in Bishkek.

One of his most significant achievements came at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he won a silver medal. In recognition of this feat, he received the Order of Manas (second class) from the president of Kyrgyzstan. He has also earned the title of Master of Sport of International Class in Kyrgyzstan.

He made history by becoming the first Greco-Roman wrestler representing Kyrgyzstan to win a gold medal at the world championships. This milestone was achieved in the 77kg category at the 2022 edition of the tournament held in Belgrade, Serbia.

His career has not been without challenges. He underwent knee surgery following the 2022 World Championships. Earlier, in 2019, he suffered another knee injury while playing football during training, which required surgery and about a year for recovery.

Apart from wrestling, he enjoys playing billiards and tennis. His sporting philosophy is simple yet profound: "Sport is my life. You need to do what a coach says, whether you want it or not." His idol is Uzbekistani wrestler Elmurat Tasmuradov.

Family Influence

Wrestling runs in his family. His older brothers Beksultan and Syimyk have also competed in Greco-Roman wrestling. Beksultan won bronze in the 97kg category at the 2021 Asian Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Syimyk claimed gold in the 63kg category at the 2023 National Championships of Kyrgyzstan.
