Despatie's notable achievements include winning two gold medals at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal. He also secured a silver medal in the 3m springboard event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
He was named Male Athlete of the Year by the Aquatic Federation of Canada multiple times between 2000 and 2010. In 2007, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale.
In 2006, he was named Personality of the Year in the Sports and Leisure category of the Gala Excellence La Presse/Radio-Canada. He was also voted Male Athlete of the Year for 2005 at the Canadian Sports Awards.
Despatie made history by becoming the first diver to be a world champion in all three individual diving events. He achieved this feat with gold medals in the 1m and 3m springboard events at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal. These were added to his gold medal from the 10m platform event at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona.
Despatie faced several injuries during his career. In June 2012, he cut his head while diving in Spain, requiring a short operation. He missed the 2011 World Championships due to a knee injury that first troubled him in March 2011.
In April 2008, he broke his right foot's fifth metatarsal during training, sidelining him for weeks before the 2008 Olympic Games. In March 2005, he suffered a back injury when his feet slammed into the platform during a dive at the Canadian National Championships in Quebec.
Despatie’s sporting philosophy is clear: "I love competing and diving. That's why I do it. It's not for medals. Although they're good. I love winning also. But the satisfaction is knowing that on one day, I can put everything together."
Outside diving, Despatie enjoys skiing and golfing. He pursued higher education in Business Administration at Andre Grasset College in Montreal.
Despatie also ventured into acting, playing Olivier Duclos in 'A vos marques! Party!', a French-language romantic comedy released in 2007.
Despatie’s legacy is marked by his historic achievements and contributions to diving. His journey from a young talent to a world champion serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes worldwide.
