Alina Kabaeva Biography

Kabaeva's training regime includes 36 hours each week. She has been coached by Irina Viner since 1993. Her first memorable sporting achievement was her trip to the 1997 Traditional Club Competition in Tokyo, Japan. She has been a national team member since she was twelve years old and was the first gymnast born in Uzbekistan to compete for Russia.

In 1998, Kabaeva surprised many by winning the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at just 15 years old. That year, she also won the All-Around title at the Russian Cup, Goodwill Games, World Youth Games, and European Championships. Her victory at these events marked her as a rising star in rhythmic gymnastics.

Olympic Success and Challenges

Kabaeva's career reached its peak when she won the Olympic gold medal in the individual all-around at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. However, her journey was not without challenges. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she was heavily favoured to win gold but dropped the hoop during her second performance, leading to an automatic deduction.

Despite this setback, Kabaeva continued to excel. After her performance at the Sydney Olympics, she considered leaving the sport but was encouraged by her coaches to continue. She went on to win five gold medals at the last Grand Prix competition of that year.

Drug Ban and Legal Issues

In 2001, Kabaeva and fellow gymnast Irina Chachina tested positive for furosemide at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) conducted a hearing and imposed a one-year suspension followed by one year's probation starting from August 30, 2001. Their appeal in February 2002 was rejected.

In June 2002, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) granted a stay of execution on their suspension. However, in January 2003, CAS confirmed FIG's decision, requiring them to serve the rest of their suspension from January 23, 2003, to April 8, 2003.

Life Beyond Gymnastics

Kabaeva announced her retirement in October 2004 after winning the ION Cup - the world club championships - held in Tokyo. She expressed satisfaction with her achievements and stated that she had done everything she could for Russia. Post-retirement, Kabaeva plans to create an international rhythmic gymnastics school for children worldwide.

Apart from gymnastics, Kabaeva has explored other interests. She played a Russian circus contortionist named 'Olga' in the Japanese movie Red Shadow directed by Yusuke Nakano. The creators praised her as a rare find for the role.

Personal Interests and Philosophy

Kabaeva enjoys collecting toys, playing with animals, and dancing. Her sporting philosophy is "Overcome yourself." She admires gymnasts like Oksana Kostina, Yana Batrchyina, Natalian Liposskaya, and Valeria Vatkina from Belarus for their unique styles.

Kabaeva's journey from a young gymnast to an Olympic champion is marked by both triumphs and challenges. Her dedication to rhythmic gymnastics continues as she aims to nurture future talents through her planned international school.
