Alonso Edward Biography

Edward's entry into athletics was casual. He recalls, "Like many other athletes, I started in the sport in a very casual way. Being at school at the end of 2005, beginning of 2006, my physical education teacher saw how fast I was and invited me to a meeting."

Coaching and Achievements

Under the guidance of his personal coach Lance Brauman from the USA, Edward has achieved notable success. His most memorable sporting achievement is winning the 200m at the 2014 IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco.

Injuries and Challenges

Edward's career has not been without challenges. A muscle strain injury in his right leg prevented him from competing at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar. He also struggled with his right hamstring in 2017 and left quadriceps in 2013 and 2012.

Injury affected his performance at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Republic of Korea, and he did not compete at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. He suffered a hamstring injury in the final of the 200m at the 2010 Central American Games in Panama. An injury also prevented him from competing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Edward lives by the motto "Timing is everything." His achievements have earned him recognition. He was Panama's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Edward became the youngest athlete from any nation to win a medal in the 200m event at the world championships when he claimed silver at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany. At age 19 years and 255 days, he secured Panama's first medal on the track at these championships.
