Amalia Perez Vazquez Biography

She made her international debut for Mexico in 1993 at the World Cup in Oklahoma City, USA. Her first major achievement came in 2008 when she became the first powerlifter to win a Paralympic gold medal for Mexico. She triumphed in the 52kg division at the Beijing Games.

Her career is marked by significant milestones. She is one of three powerlifters to have won six career Paralympic medals. Her victory in the 61kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Games made her one of three female powerlifters to have won four Paralympic gold medals.

Challenges and Injuries

Her journey has not been without challenges. She underwent surgery on her left shoulder in February 2013 and was unable to train for seven months. In 2021, she had surgery on her gallbladder. Ahead of the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, she suffered an injury to her right shoulder, which continued to trouble her into 2024.

Switching Categories

In 2018, she moved from competing in the 55kg category to the 61kg category. She won titles in this new weight class at both the Asia-Oceania Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan, and the Americas Open Championships in Bogota, Colombia. She described this move as a good test to see how far she could get.
