Bekkering's passion for sailing was sparked by her grandfather, who gifted her and her sister an old Optimist. Initially, she only sailed in mild conditions. However, her sister's enthusiasm encouraged her to sail more frequently. This gradual increase in sailing led to a deeper commitment to the sport.
