Chupkov's accolades include finishing third in the Male Swimmer of the Year category at the 2019 European Swimming League Awards. He was named Sportsman of the Year at the 2019 Pride of Russia Awards and Male Athlete of the Year by the All-Russian Swimming Federation in 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Nicknamed "Professor" by his teammates, Chupkov enjoys football and playing computer games. He holds a degree in Sport Studies from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism in Moscow. Fluent in English and Russian, he resides in Moscow.
Chupkov cites his family and coach Alexander Nemtyrev as major influences in his career. He admires Russian swimmer Aleksandr Popov and mixed martial artist Fedor Emelianenko. His sporting philosophy is: "If I'm nervous, then I'm ready. Excitement helps me."
Before every race, Chupkov shaves himself. He believes this ritual changes how the water feels during his swim. This practice is part of his preparation routine.
After failing to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Chupkov took a break from swimming. He returned to training in late September 2021. Reflecting on this period, he said it was necessary to rest and recover before feeling ready to compete again.
Chupkov competes in both 100m and 200m breaststroke events but feels more suited to the longer distance. He describes the 200m as more intellectual, akin to a chess game where strategic pacing is crucial.
Chupkov's dedication to swimming continues as he aims to enjoy the process without setting concrete guidelines for his career's duration.
