Azizul Hasni Awang Biography

Azizulhasni pursued higher education in Exercise Science at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Despite his parents' wishes for him to become a doctor, he was determined to excel in cycling. At 15, he joined Bukit Jalil Sports School to follow his dream of becoming a national champion.

Career Highlights

Azizulhasni's career is filled with significant achievements. He became the first Malaysian track cyclist to win an Olympic medal by securing third place in the keirin event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He has also been honoured with multiple awards, including the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia Best Athlete Award in 2019, 2017, and 2009.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout his career, Azizulhasni faced numerous injuries. In April 2022, he underwent open heart surgery due to an anomalous aortic origin of the right coronary artery. He returned to elite competition by November 2022. In 2019, he lost part of his fingertip while setting up his bike and missed the Asian track championships.

In 2018, a viral lung infection forced him to withdraw from the individual sprint event at the Commonwealth Games. He also withdrew from the 2016 World Championships due to a flu virus and a thigh muscle tear. In 2011, he dislocated his knee during an event in Indonesia and suffered a severe injury when a shard of wood impaled his calf during a crash at the World Cup event in Manchester.

Azizulhasni is married to Athiah Ilyana Abdul Samat and has two daughters, Amna Khadeeja and Amna Maryam. The family resides in Melbourne, Australia. Despite living abroad, they maintain their Malaysian roots by speaking Bahasa Malaysia at home.
