Indian women's badminton team blanked top-seeded Japan in the semi-final of the ongoing Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024 on Saturday (February 17) to make it to their maiden final of the prestigious continental tournament.
A spirited performance from the young female shuttlers helped India defeat Japan 3-2 in Selangor, Malaysia. This is the first-ever final appearance of any Indian side (men and women) in the continental showpiece.

Ace shuttler and two-time Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu had a forgettable day as she failed to secure a win in singles and doubles ties. But the young India brigade-led by 17-year-old Anmol Kharab had other ideas to help their team cruise to a formidable 3-1 win in the semis.
Sindhu lost to Aya Ohori 13-21, 20-22 while the double pair of Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand defeated Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida 21-17, 16-21; 22-20 to restore parity on the scoreboard.
Young Ashmita Chaliha then produced an upset as she defeated former world champion Nozomi Okuhara in straight sets 21-17, 21-14. In the second doubles game, Sindhu and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to the duo of Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto 14-21, 11-21.
With the scorecard stuck at 2-all, it went down to Anmol Kharab - the world number 472 - once again showed nerves of steel to defeat Natsuki Nidaira (WR 29) by 21-14, 21-18 and helped India win the match 3-2.
Team India will now face Thailand in the final as they eye their maiden gold medal in the competition. India have won two bronze medals in men's team events in the 2016 and 2020 editions. The women's team has already confirmed a better colour of the medal in this edition.
The Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024 is crucial for shuttlers' perspective as it provides a valuable Race to Paris 2024 ranking points.
