New Delhi, Dec 13: India's female badminton star and Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu has been named 'most improved player of the year' by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Monday (Dec 12).

The 21-year-old shuttler from Hyderabad was honoured at the Players' Reception and Gala Dinner in Dubai.

Sindhu was defeated by World No. 1 and Spain's Carolina Marin in Rio Olympic finals.

"I didn't expect to get this award, so I'm excited and happy. It's good to be here in Dubai. It's my first time at the Dubai World Superseries Finals. My draw is tough, I'm with Carolina (Marin), He Bingjiao and Sun Yu. I have to play well from the start," Sindhu was quoted as saying by BWF's official website.

Earlier last month, Sindhu won her maiden China Superseries Premier badminton tournament on November 20. The ace Indian shuttler defeated China's Sun Yu by 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 to add another feather in her illustrious cap in the year 2016.

Sindhu, who became the toast of the country after becoming the first Indian women to win a silver at Rio Games, continued her rampaging run as she lifted the prestigious title after beating Sun 21-11 17-21 21-11 in the summit clash that lasted an hour and nine minutes.

Sindhu had reached her maiden Super Series final at the Denmark Open last year but the title eluded her then as she lost in straight games to 2012 Olympic champion China's Li Xuerei.

2016 has been a fantastic year for the 21-year-old shuttler.
