PBL auction: Which badminton player will be playing for which team

Two-time World Champion and Rio Olympic gold medallist Carolin Marin was bagged by Hyderabad Hunters for Rs 61.5 lakhs.

New Delhi, Nov 10: The players auction of the second edition of the Premier Badminton League (PBL) sprung many surprises on Wednesday (Nov 9).

Contrary to the popular belief, India's new badminton sensation PV Sindhu and star shuttler Saina Nehwal went for low prices in the auction.

Two-time World Champion and Rio Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin was bagged by Hyderabad Hunters for Rs 61.5 lakhs, while male shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, who had reached the quarterfinals at Rio Olympics, fetched the highest amount by an Indian.

He was purchased for Rs 51 lakhs by the Awadhe Warriors after a bidding battle with the Bengaluru Blasters.

Sindhu was unlucky to fetch an amount of just Rs 39 lakhs despite being the best Indian iconic player after her performance at the Rio Olympics.

154 players went under the hammer, the list including 16 Olympic medallists. A total of 15 iconic players went under the hammer and 12 of them were fetched by the six franchies.

Fifty players were acquired by the six teams in the fray who had a kitty of Rs 1.93 crore each. Each team could acquire a maximum of 10 players, including 6 foreigners.

Awadhe Warriors, a team owned by Sahara, spent Rs 51 lakh on India's top-ranked men's player Kidambi Srikanth. He was purchased the Warriors after a bidding battle with the Bengaluru Blasters.

Saina, who alongwith Lee Chong Wei, was the costliest buys at USD 100,000 during the first edition, went unsold in the first round of bidding and was retained by her previous franchise Awadhe Warriors for the base price of Rs 33 lakhs.

South Korean woman shuttler Sung Ji Hyun emerged as the second costliest player as she went to Mumbai Rockets for Rs 60 lakhs.
