PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth storm into quarter finals of World Championships

Glasgow, Aug 24: Ace India shuttlers PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective games to storm into the quarterfinals of the World Championship here on Thursday (August 24).

Srikanth, who slipped two places in the latest BWF World ranking released today, defeated Denmark's Anders Antonsen in straight sets 21-14, 21-18.

Srikanth won the first game 21-14 in just 17 minutes while clinched the second game by 21-18. All over, it was yet another comfortable victory for the Indian.

The Hyderabadi male shuttler took Antonsen by surprise at the net and forced him to play most of his strokes from the backcourt and outplayed the Dane once he took the control of his shots.

On a 12-match winning streak, Srikanth knocked out World No. 18 Antonsen 21-14 21-18. The World No. 10 Indian will clash with top seed and World No. 1 Korean Son Wan Ho in the quarterfinals.

"It was a good game today. There were some intense rallies and I am happy for the win," Srikanth told PTI.

Srikanth, who finished at the pre-quarterfinals in the last two editions, has a 4-4 head-to-head record against Son, whom he has beaten twice this year en route to his titles at Indonesia and Australia in June.

"It will be a tough match but I have been improving with each match and looking forward to a good game tomorrow (Friday)," Srikanth added.

Sindhu, on the other hand, survived a scare as Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi gave the Rio Olympic silver-medallist a stiff fight. The 22-year-old Indian shuttler, however, showed maturity and won the match by winning the second and the third game. The entire match lasted for 86 minutes.

After losing the first game 19-21, the Indian showed great comeback and won the remaining two games by 23-21, 21-16. The Indian shuttler looked out of touch but somehow she managed to escape yet another disappointing loss in the second game.

The World No. 4 smashed her way into the quarter-finals of the women's singles.

Saina Nehwal advanced into the quarters of Worlds for the seventh consecutive time as she defeated World Number 3 Sung Ji Hyun 21-19, 21-15.

The London Olympics bronze-medallist shuttler looked in control from the start and hardly gave her opponent a chance to win any game.
