Sindhu defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 21-10 in the semi-final match to enter in the finals.
The 21-year-old Indian shuttler maintained lead throughout the first game and won it comfortably but her Japanese opponent came back strongly in the second game.
At one stage Sindhu and Okuhara's scores were levelled on 10-10, but the Indian shuttler didn't give any chance to her opponent after that and won the game single-handedly.
A win against Japan's Okuhara in the semifinal has assured Sindhu of at least a silver, that would be only the second medal for India at the Games. The Indian shuttler will now face World No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain for the gold medal on Aug 19.
