Singapore, May 31: Continuing their stellar run, Indian women's doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated another top-ranked Korean pair, World No. 6 Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong, in a thrilling quarterfinal at the Singapore Open 2024 on Friday, May 31.
The Indian duo registered a superb comeback victory, edging out the Koreans 18-21, 21-19, 24-22 to enter their first-ever semifinal at a BWF World Tour Super 750 event.

After their quarterfinal triumph, Treesa and Gayatri interacted with the media. Reflecting on their win, Gayatri said, "It feels amazing to beat yet another seeded pair. We were down in the second set but we fought back and emerged victorious. It was a great win."
Treesa added, "After a long time, we are getting to play against seeded players and (are) happy with the performance we have put up. Also, playing in front of this audience feels awesome."
When asked about any change in strategies coming into this tournament, Gayatri explained, "There was no strategy as such, we just wanted to give our 100 per cent on the court and enjoy the game. They are tough opponents and they won't give you anything easy. So, happy with the effort."
Treesa added, "We didn't give them easy points, even if the rallies were long we played well. I think we were more attacking today and that also helped."
In the semifinal on Saturday (June 1), Treesa and Gayatri will face Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida of Japan who defeated Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 in the quarterfinal.
Earlier, in the pre-quarterfinals, Treesa and Gayatri stunned World No. 2 Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea to enter the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 30. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, ranked 30th globally, overcame the Korean duo 21-9, 14-21, 21-15 in a match lasting close to an hour. This victory marked their first win in three meetings against the Korean pair.
This was a significant victory for India, especially since other prominent players had been knocked out in the early phases of the tournament. Heavyweights like Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, and PV Sindhu had already lost their respective matches. Treesa and Gayatri's spirited run raises hopes for India, complementing the already world-class men's duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
