Bonk's interest in sports started with sailing, but his brother introduced him to weightlifting. He competes for KS Budowlani Opole and is coached by Ryszard Szewczyk at the club level and Ryszard Socko at the national level. Bonk made his international debut in 2000 at the Grand Prix in Slovakia, representing Poland.
