Ben Maher Biography

Maher’s dedication to equestrian sports has led to numerous accolades. Notably, he won individual gold at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. This achievement was recognised with the Magic Moment of the Year award at the 2021 Horse & Hound Awards in Great Britain.

In 2019, Maher and his horse Explosion W received the 5* International Horse and Rider Combination Award at the British Showjumping Awards Ball. They also won the International Senior Team Horse and Rider Combination Award in 2018. His early promise was evident when he was named Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013.

Trainer Steven Smith has been a significant influence on Maher's career. He also looks up to British equestrian jumper Robert Smith and German equestrian jumper Ludger Beerbaum. Injuries and Recovery

Maher has faced challenges, including surgery on his lower back in January 2020. Earlier, in April 2013, he fractured his lower back during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. Despite these setbacks, his resilience has been unwavering.

In September 2013, Maher became the first British jumper in 20 years to be ranked world number one by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). At age 22, he became the youngest person to win the Hickstead Derby in England.

Elsenham Stud

Maher runs Elsenham Stud in Bishop's Stortford, where he coaches riders and trains and trades horses. He aims to provide young riders with opportunities similar to those available in America. His business model ensures financial stability even if he does not win grand prix events.

Maher emphasises a supportive environment at Elsenham Stud. "There are people helping get me to where I need to be," he says. "They work with me but they're part of the family, and I try to look after everybody and keep a friendly atmosphere."

Looking ahead, Maher plans to continue his involvement with Elsenham Stud while focusing on coaching and training new talent. His commitment to equestrian sports remains strong as he aims to nurture future champions.
