Ben Proud, a dedicated athlete from Plymouth, England, has made significant strides in the world of swimming. He began learning to swim at age one and started training seriously at 17. His early years in Malaysia, a tropical country, played a crucial role in his affinity for water sports.

Proud trains with the Energy Standard Swim Club in Turkey under coach James Gibson and at Bath University in England under coach Mark Skimming. He moved to Turkey in February 2017 to train more intensively, spending most of the year there.
Proud made his international debut for Great Britain in 2013. In 2017, he won a world title in the 50m butterfly, which shifted his attitude towards swimming. He felt better prepared for an Olympic medal after this win compared to his fourth-place finish in the 50m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Games.
Despite his successes, Proud faced challenges, including several injuries in 2015. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, he was disqualified for movement on the starting blocks during his 50m butterfly heat. Although he appealed, the disqualification was upheld.
Proud's sporting philosophy is "Work hard in silence, let success be your noise." He credits coaches Jon Rudd and Francis Kiu as the most influential people in his career. His dedication to improvement is evident as he continues to strive for excellence.
Initially a butterfly specialist, Proud switched focus to freestyle because the 50m butterfly is not an Olympic event. He aims to compete at future international events and hopes to return to Malaysia after his swimming career to train and work with local children.
In 2018, Proud was named Devon and Cornwall's Sports Personality of the Year. His achievements have earned him recognition and respect within the sports community.
Proud resides in Plymouth, England, and holds a degree in Sport Studies from the University of St. Mark and St. John. He speaks English fluently and has expressed a deep connection to Malaysia, where he spent his formative years.
Proud's journey is marked by dedication, resilience, and a constant drive for improvement. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes worldwide.
