Throughout her career, Tweddle faced several injuries. She missed the 2012 European Championships due to knee surgery and withdrew from two events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of a rib injury. She also underwent surgeries for ankle issues in 2001 and 2004 and had surgery on a torn biceps tendon in 2002.
In 2010, Tweddle was honoured with an MBE for her contributions to British gymnastics. She became the first British woman to win a world gymnastics title by taking gold on the uneven bars at the 2006 World Championships. She also won the British championship seven years in a row from 2001 to 2007.
Tweddle resides in Liverpool and is also a student of Sports Science at Liverpool John Moores University. Apart from gymnastics, she enjoys shopping. Her brother James has played hockey for England U21.
Away from gymnastics, Tweddle runs a company called Total Gymnastics, which collaborates with schools, leisure centres, and clubs to promote the sport. She is also involved in promoting drug-free sports through the 100% Me Programme.
Tweddle initially planned to retire before the 2012 Olympic Games but decided to compete on home soil. She confirmed her retirement after the Games. Despite early reservations about gymnastics, she quickly excelled, becoming second in the country within a year of starting training.
