Brittney Griner Biography

Griner plays for Phoenix Mercury in the USA and UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia. She has been coached by Sandy Brondello for Mercury and Dawn Staley for the national team. Her preferred position is Centre. She made her international debut in 2011, competing for the United States.

Achievements and Awards

Griner has earned numerous accolades throughout her career. She was named Player of the Game in the 2018 World Cup gold medal game in Tenerife, Spain. In 2014 and 2015, she was honoured as Defensive Player of the Year in both the WNBA and WCBA in China. Additionally, she was named WCBA Centre of the Year in 2015.

During her college years, Griner was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in 2011. She also received the United States Basketball Writers Association National Freshman of the Year award in 2010 after setting an all-time single-season NCAA Division I record for blocked shots with 223 in 2009/10.

Griner has faced several injuries during her career. In July 2017, she sustained a bruise to her left knee bone and a sprain to her right ankle. In September 2014, she suffered an eye injury that required her to wear glasses during the World Championships in Turkey.

In September 2015, she and Glory Johnson were suspended for seven WNBA games after being arrested on misdemeanour assault and disorderly conduct charges in April that year. Griner pleaded guilty, and both players were ordered to complete six months of domestic violence counselling. The couple married shortly after the incident but have since divorced.
