Carolina Marín Biography

Marin started playing badminton when her best friend invited her to learn the sport. She enjoyed the opportunity to compete in tournaments worldwide and meet other players. She trains under coach Fernando Rivas at the High Performance Centre in Madrid.

Achievements and Awards

Marin's list of awards is extensive. She was named Female European Player of the Year by Badminton Europe in 2014, 2016, and 2018. In 2018, she received the Andalusia Medal and was presented with the Gold Medal for Sports Merit by the Spanish Sports Council in 2016. The Badminton World Federation named her Female Player of the Year in 2015.

In 2014, Marin received the National Sports Award as Best Female Athlete in Spain and the Young Andalusia Prize for Sports. She also won the Golden Female Athlete award in 2011, presented by the Huelva Sport Association.

Marin became the first Spanish badminton player to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games, achieving this feat at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. An elbow injury kept her from playing at the 2018 French Open, while a hip injury forced her to retire from a match at the 2017 Hong Kong Open. Following the 2016 Olympic Games, she dealt with a sacrum injury.

Marin resides in Huelva, Spain, and speaks both English and Spanish. She holds a degree in Physiotherapy from the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM). In 2019, she began studying for a degree in dietetics at Alfonso X el Sabio University (UAX) in Madrid.
