Chantal Haenen Biography

Her most memorable achievement came in 2021 when she won gold in the H5 road race at the World Championships in Cascais, Portugal. She also competed at the Para rowing world championships in 2022 and 2023. Despite her success in rowing, she decided to focus solely on cycling for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Educational Background and Coaching

She studied law at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Her national coach is Floris Goesinnen. She believes that both rowing and cycling complement each other, helping her become stronger on the bike.

Inspiration and Philosophy

Her hero is German handcyclist and cross-country skier Andrea Eskau. She lives by the philosophy, "When I do something, I want to do it right." This mindset has driven her to excel in both handcycling and rowing.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, she aims to win gold in the H5 road race and time trial events at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. She believes focusing on cycling gives her the best chance of achieving this goal.

Multi-Sport Athlete

She initially took up rowing after competing in cycling at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Although she qualified for Paris with her rowing partner Corne de Koning, she chose to focus on cycling due to a difference of opinion with the association about the programme.

"I went to the Tokyo Games for Para cycling and it was really cool. I really learned a lot but I missed something," she said. "I was looking for variety, cycling alone was not enough for me."

Her journey from dressage to handcycling and rowing showcases her versatility and determination. With her eyes set on gold at the 2024 Paralympic Games, she continues to train rigorously under the guidance of Floris Goesinnen.

Her story is one of resilience and adaptability, making her a notable figure in both handcycling and rowing communities.
