Charline Picon Biography

Picon initially competed in the Aloha and Mistral classes before transitioning to RS:X boats in 2006. Her dedication and skill led her to significant milestones. In 2016, she became the first female French sailor to win an Olympic medal in the RS:X class, securing gold at the Rio de Janeiro Games. This victory also marked her as the first French sailor of either gender to achieve this feat.

Training and Coaching

Picon trains at the national sailing training hub in La Rochelle. Her regimen includes muscle strength and endurance exercises, along with yoga. She is coached by Cedric Leroy, who has been instrumental in her development as an athlete. Her club, Societes des Regates Rochelaises (SRR), is based in La Rochelle.

Personal Life and Education

Outside of her sporting career, Picon serves in the Armed Forces and is also a trained physiotherapist, having studied at the Institute of Physiotherapy Training Marseille (IFMK) in France. She speaks both English and French fluently.

Challenges and Comebacks

Picon faced a significant challenge during the 2008/09 season when she required surgery for a shoulder injury. She made a strong comeback, returning to action in September 2009. After winning gold at the 2016 Olympics, she considered retiring but decided to continue when RS:X was confirmed for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

In 2016, Picon was named Sailor of the Year by the French Sailing Federation. Additionally, a nautical centre in Ronce-les-Bains, France, has been named after her, recognising her contributions to the sport.

Maternity Break and Return

Following her Olympic triumph in 2016, Picon took a break to start a family. Her daughter Lou was born in July 2017. Picon returned to competition in April 2018, motivated by her daughter’s presence. She often brings Lou to competitions, stating that her daughter’s presence contributes to her success.
