The death of Vesely's former crewmate, Thomas Zereske, just weeks before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens had a profound impact on him. Zereske's passing from leukemia deeply affected Vesely and motivated him to perform well at the Games.

In Athens 2004, Vesely won a gold medal in the C2 1000m event with Tomasz Wylenzek. This victory was dedicated to his late friend Zereske. The win was unexpected but came after a strategic position swap suggested by their coach.

Position Swap Strategy

Before the 2004 Olympics, Vesely and Wylenzek were not satisfied with their times. Their coach recommended switching positions in the boat. This change led to an improvement of nearly 10 seconds within a week, setting them on the path to Olympic gold.
