O'Connor runs Karlswood Stables in Batterstown, where he trains horses and coaches young riders. He also coaches in the United States during the northern hemisphere winter and has a base near Frankfurt, Germany. "We have so many facets at Karlswood Stables," he said. "Over the last number of years, completing Karlswood and developing our students has been my main goal."
O'Connor aims to win gold at the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028. He hopes to continue competing until the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. "The sport has changed so much," he noted. "For me it's a case of finding the right balance between the many moving parts in my business."
In September 2018, O'Connor was named athlete representative on the jumping committee of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). He resigned from this role in September 2019 to focus on other activities. "I decided to step down from the role to focus on other activities as I felt I wasn't making an impact," he explained.
Outside of show jumping, O'Connor enjoys walking, travel, cinema, and reading. These hobbies provide him with a well-rounded lifestyle that complements his professional commitments.
