2nd ODI: Twitterati confused with Umpires' decision for lunch as India stay two runs short of win

Centurion, Feb 4: It was one of those instances when the cricketing rules leave you in dismay when the umpires called for a lunch break during the second one-day international match between India and South Africa.

India required just two more runs to win when the on-field umpires signalled the players to head towards the dressing room. The umpires' decision left the cricketers, audiences and commentators bewildered as everyone thought the rules sometimes could be the cause of cricket's own peril.

Chasing a paltry total of 119, India reached 117/1 in 19 overs with skipper Virat Kohli (44*) and his batting partner Shikhar Dhawan (51*) present at the crease. As India restricted South Africa cheaply and within 33 overs, the innings break wasn't taken.

After 15 overs, the umpires extended the play for four more overs and India reached closer to victory but the umpires decided not to allow any overs further and the teams were asked to head towards the pavilion.

The umpires' decision left everyone stunned and India skipper Kohli couldn't believe his eyes when the umpires signalled towards the dressing room. Even the commentators were left stunned with the unusual decision.

Not just the commentators and cricketers, even the crowd present at the Supersport Park seemed unhappy with the umpires' call for lunch and started leaving the venue for the home side's defeat was just a formality from that stage.

But several fans and experts took to Twitter to criticise the shocking move of the umpires as they found it to be quite funny.

Here's how Twitterati reacted to the umpires' decision:

Uncalled for move!

Cricket expert Mazhar Arshad felt the umpires could have tweaked the rules a bit and that couldn't have harmed the game.

Lack of common sense

Former England cricketer Alec Stewart too criticised the umpire's decision.

Sehwag at his witty best

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, who is known for his witty tweets, took a subtle dig at the umpires.

What a joke!

India cricketer-turned-commentator Mohammed Kaif too was shocked with the umpires' decision and called it a joke with the players.

Aakash Chopra raises a concern

India cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra too condemned the umpires' decision and even raised some valid questions pertaining to the move.

Another one from Aakash Chopra

Surprised with the umpires' decision Aakash Chopra felt cricket could be its own enemy at times.

Ridiculous move!

Another cricket journalist criticised the umpires' call to take a lunch.
