Sharma, who was given preference over out of form Cheteshwar Pujara, failed to impress with the bat and scored just 9 runs.

The Mumbai batsman was the first to exit in the third consecutive maiden over and 26th over of the innings during the post-lunch session as he nicked an off-stump ball by debutant Alzarri Joseph.

India were under trouble when Sharma came in to bat after opener Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Virat Kohli departed cheaply. He along with Ajinkya Rahane tried to steer the Indian innings but the stylish batsman threw away his wicket in the 26th over.

Rohit's flop show and his failure in capitalising over the opportunity irked cricket fans who took to Twitter to slam the 'talented' batsman.
