All you need to know about ICC World T20 2016 in India

The ICC World Twenty20 2016 tournament is set to begin in Nagpur tomorrow (March 8) with 2 matches scheduled on the opening day.

India have been installed as the favourites for the tournament after having won 3 back-to-back series in the format. They won the Asia Cup yesterday (March 6) in Bangladesh.

When does WT20 start and end? (Ind-Pak contest on March 19)

  • The tournament runs from March 8 (Tuesday) to April 3 (Sunday)

How many teams are participating? (Indian side enters as No. 1)

  • There are 16 teams in the fray. 10 Full Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and 6 Associate Members
Groups and stages
  • First round (group winners to progress to second round - Super 10)

Group A - Bangladesh, Netherlands, Ireland and Oman

Group B - Zimbabwe, Scotland, Hong Kong and Afghanistan

  • Second round groups (Super 10) - Top 2 from each group go to semi-finals

Group 1 - Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, England and winner group B (Q1 B)

Group 2 - India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and winner group A (Q1 A)

Who plays in the opening match?

  • Zimbabwe and Hong Kong will kick-start the tournament in Nagpur on March 8 (Tuesday) at 3 PM IST. Scotland face Afghanistan at the same venue in the evening (7.30 PM IST)

What is the format?

  • The event is divided into 3 phases - First Stage (Qualifiers), Super 10 and Knockouts (Semi-finals and final)
  • First - 8 teams are divided into 2 groups. The group winners progress to join the other 8 teams in Super 10
  • In Super 10, the top 2 from each pool goes to the semi-finals

On which channel can I watch the matches?

  • All matches will be telecast Live on Star Sports (in India)

Where to buy tickets?

  • Tickets can be purchased online on ICC's website www.icc-cricket.com
  • Tickets are also available at match venues (Not for India games, semi-finals, final)
  • There is a lottery system in place for India matches, semi-finals and final
  • The online process began on February 24, 2016

How many tickets can one buy per transaction?

  • There is a limit of 2 tickets per person for India matches, the semi-finals and finals. There is a limit of 6 tickets per person for all non-India matches and all women's matches (except the women's semi-finals and final which are ticket with the men's matches played at the same venue on the same day).
  • There is no limit to the number of matches that a person can buy tickets for, subject to the purchaser being physically able to attend each match for which he is buying tickets. For example, a person cannot buy tickets to matches at different venues on the same day.

What are the prices of tickets?

  • Each venue has different prices. At Nagpur, Dharamsala, New Delhi, Kolkata and Mohali, the starting price is Rs 100. In Bengaluru, the least priced is Rs 250 while in Mumbai it is Rs 500
  • In Chennai (women's matches), the minimum price of a ticket is Rs 50
  • The highest price of a ticket is Rs 35,000 in Mumbai

  • Sri Lanka are the holders. They defeated India in 2014 final

How many matches to be played in 2016 edition?

  • A total of 58 matches. 35 in men's section and 23 in women's category. The tournament is being held simultaneously for both

Which are the venues and where is the final?

  • Bengaluru, Chennai, Dharamsala, Kolkata, Mohali, Mumbai, Nagpur and New Delhi are the host cities. Kolkata's Eden Gardens will host the final on April 3

What are the match timings?

  • The first match of the day starts at 3 PM IST and the second at 7.30 PM IST. However, the semi-finals and final are from 7 PM IST

Who are the first-timers this year?

  • Oman are making their World T20 debut this year

Who are the previous 5 champions? (Look back at previous editions)

  • 2007 - India; 2009 - Pakistan; 2010 - England; 2012 - West Indies; 2014 - Sri Lanka

Are there reserve days for all matches?

  • No. There is a reserve day allocated only for the final

What happens if the final is washed out even on a reserve day?

  • If the final is not played on both days (acutal day and reserve day), then the trophy will be shared

  • Super Over will be used to decided the winner in all tied matches

Points System for the tournament

  • Win - 2 Points; Tie, no result or abandoned - 1; Loss - 0

What happens if the teams are on equal points? Who goest through to the next stage?

  • First Round

In the event of teams finishing on equal points in their Group, the right to play in the Super 10 series will be decided in the following order of priority:

The team with the more wins in its Group will be placed in the higher position.

If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the Group stage then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in the Group stage will be placed in the higher position

If two or more teams are still equal, they will be ordered according to the head to head match played between them (points then net run rate in those matches).

If the above does not resolve the Group ordering, or if all matches within a Group produce no results, then any tied teams will be ordered as per their Group seedings.

  • Second Round (Super 10)

In the event of teams finishing on equal points at the end of the Second Round, the right to play in the Semi-Final will be decided in the following order of priority:

The most wins in the Second Round matches.

If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the Second Round matches only then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in the Second Round matches will be placed in the higher position.

If two or more teams are still equal, they will be ordered according to the head to head match played between them (points then net run rate in those matches).

If the above does not resolve the Group ordering, or if all matches within a Group produce no results, then any tied teams will be ordered as per their Group seedings.

  • Semi-finals

If a Semi-final is tied, the teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine which team progresses to the Final.

If following a tie, weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is a no result or abandoned, then the team which finished first in its Second Round group shall progress to the Final.

  • Final

In the event of a tied Final, the teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine which team is the winner.

If weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is a no result or abandoned, the teams shall be declared joint winners.

First session - 3 PM to 4.25 PM

Interval - 4.25 PM to 4.45 PM

Second session - 4.45 PM to 6.10 PM

  • Evening Match (except for the Semi-finals and Final)

First Session - 7.30 PM to 8.55 PM

Interval - 8.55 PM to 9.15 PM

Second Session - 9.15 PM - 10.40 PM

  • Semi-finals and Final

First Session - 7 PM to 8.25 PM

Interval - 8.25 PM to 8.45 PM

Second Session - 8.45 PM to 10.10 PM
