Asia Cup 2023 Under COVDI-19 Threat? Two Sri Lanka cricketers test positive for pandemic

Colombo, Aug 26: Just days before the highly-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 - which is being jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka - the Sri Lankan cricket team has been dealt a massive blow.

Sri Lanka - who are the defending champions of the Asia Cup, which was played in the T20 format last year in the UAE - see four of their key players missing from the continental showpiece which will be played in the ODI format this year.

To make matters worse, the Sri Lankan camp has also been hit by the COVID-19 storm. The news of two Sri Lankan cricketers returning COVID-19 positive is set to flare tensions in the coming days and might even put the safety of the tournament in jeopardy.

COVID-19 concerns in Sri Lankan camp

Fast bowler Dushamantha Chameera is likely to be ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury he sustained during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL). This injury has put his participation in doubt and will be a significant loss for Sri Lanka's bowling attack.

Additionally, leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who suffered a thigh niggle ahead of the LPL final, may miss at least two matches of the Asia Cup. The spin-bowling all-rounder, Hasaranga, has been in exceptional form both with bat and ball during the LPL, making him an integral part of Sri Lanka's team. His absence would be deeply felt by the side.

COVID-19-positive players in Sri Lankan team

Adding salt to the injury, Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando have tested positive for COVID-19. Both players were potential selections for the Asia Cup squad but their availability now depends on their recovery speed.

They contracted the virus towards the end of LPL and will only be included in the squad if they test negative. The Sri Lankan Cricket must ensure the virus doesn't spread further in their camp to prevent it from spreading to the other teams. The board, along with the Asian Cricket Council officials, should closely monitor the development.

Impact on Sri Lanka's team combination

The injury to Hasaranga is undoubtedly one of Sri Lanka's biggest blows. His performances in recent tournaments have showcased his ability as both a wicket-taker and run-getter. It will be challenging for Sri Lanka to find a suitable replacement who can match his contributions on both fronts.

While there are options available to replace Chameera with Dilshan Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha, or Asitha Fernando, finding someone who can replicate Hasaranga's impact will prove difficult for Sri Lanka. His versatility as a spinner makes him an invaluable asset to the team.

Sri Lanka's preparations for the Asia Cup have been severely disrupted due to injuries and Covid-19. The absence of key players such as Dushamantha Chameera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Kusal Perera, and Avishka Fernando will undoubtedly weaken their squad. These players have been instrumental in Sri Lanka's recent success and finding suitable replacements will be a challenge.

Big task ahead for Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket faces a big task to ensure the pandemic is contained and no other team gets infected with it. The board will have to identify no other person in the Sri Lankan squad, including players and support staff, are infected by COVID-19.

Challenges for the Sri Lankan Team

As Sri Lanka begins their campaign against Bangladesh on August 31, they will need to regroup quickly and find a way to overcome these setbacks. It is crucial for the team management to assess alternative options and ensure that the selected squad is capable of competing at a high level.

The Asia Cup promises intense competition among Asian cricketing nations, and Sri Lanka's ability to adapt to these challenges will determine their chances of defending their title.

Despite the setbacks, there is still hope for Sri Lanka if they can rally together as a team and showcase their resilience on the field. Only time will tell how this adversity affects Sri Lanka's performance in the tournament. Ther
