Azharuddin hoped against the hope for son's survival

Hyderabad, Sept 17: Ex-Cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and Congress MP, Moradabad hoped that his son, Ayazuddin would survive despite of being told by doctors at Apollo Hospital that his chances of survival looked bleak.

According to a senior doctor at Apollo, Ayazuddin's brain stopped functioning on Sept 15, after which he passed away on Sept 16.

"We had informed this (that Ayaz had very little chance of surviving) the family on Thursday afternoon, but were asked to continue with the treatment in any case. The non-functioning of a brain is equal to death. However, Azharuddin was hoping for a miracle to happen," said the doctor.

Reports also suggest that Alok Ranjan, neurosurgeon, Apollo Hospital examined Ayazuddin before leaving for Muscat.

"Sadly, Ayazuddin could not survive. His heart stopped functioning at 11:51 am today (Friday)," said Ravindra Babu, medical superintendent at the hospital.

"Ayaz was critical from the first day itself, but being an athlete, he could perhaps battle for almost five days," he added.

"Azhar took his son's death very boldly. However, the rest of the family could not hold back their tears. Naureen, Ayaz's mother, was crying. Even Sangeeta Bijlani, Azhar's second wife, could not control her emotions," said Babu.

The 19-year-old passed away on Sept 16 after a tragic bike accident that cost him his life. Ayaz was buried in a graveyard at Santosh Nagar after prayers were offered at the historic Mecca Masjid. [Read more: Hyd: Azharuddin's son Ayazuddin dies at Apollo Hospital]
