Royal Challengers Bangalore held on to their nerves in the dying moments as they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 3 wickets in a low-scoring thriller. With this win, RCB returned to winning ways and the Faf du Plessis-led side picked up two crucial points.
While credit goes to Kolkata Knight Riders for their effort as they never allowed Royal Challengers to breathe easily in the run chase.
Chasing 129, Royal Challengers had a disappointing start as Umesh Yadav once again proved he's the best powerplay bowler for the second time in the row when he picked up two wickets under six overs.
From his first 3 overs in the powerplay, Umesh conceded just 12 runs and dismissed Anuj Rawat in his first over and then trapped the big fish in Virat Kohli for 12 in his second over. Tim Southee - who made his debut for KKR - dismissed RCB skipper Faf du Plessis in his first over.
The RCB promoted England all-rounder David Willey to stem the rot and along with Sherfane Rutherford, Willey tried to rescue RCB's innings. The duo added 45 runs for the fourth wicket before Sunil Narine ended Willey's resistance for 18 off 28 deliveries.
The mystery spinner from the Caribbean once again bowled miserly as he finished with figures of 1 for 12 from his four overs.
Shahbaz Ahmed was promoted by team management in the middle overs and the youngster played a decent cameo of 27 off 20 deliveries.
The left-handed batter hit three maximums and released the pressure off his partner Sherfane Rutherford. Ahmed was stumped by Sheldon Jackson while trying to clear Varun Chakaravarthy for another maximum but missed it completely.
But Tim Southee's final over changed the complexion of the game when he dismissed set Sharfane Rutherford and Wanindu Hasaranga in the 18th over.
Venkatesh Iyer bowled the 19th over for KKR but he conceded two boundaries and the equation went to 7 off the final over. But seasoned campaigner Dinesh Karthik finished it off in style as he hit a six and a four in on the first two balls bowled by Russell.
Earlier in the day, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel and Akash Deep bowled exceedingly well as Royal Challengers restricted the Knight Riders to 128 in 18.5 overs.
Young pacer Akash Deep caught opener Venkatesh Iyer off his own bowling and gave an early jolt to the Knight Riders in the powerplay.
Mohammad Siraj then dismissed Ajinkya Rahane caught at deep square leg by Shahbaz Ahmed. Rahane had scored only 9 before walking back to the dugout.
Akash struck for RCB in the final over of the powerplay when he got dangerous-looking Nitish Rana caught at deep square. It was an outstanding catch by David Willey running backwards who covered a lot of distance running from backwards-square.
With top-three back in the dugout in the powerplay, Knights still had some firepower left but no batter could convert the start into a big knock.
Hasaranga showed why he's rated so highly in the T20 format as he returned with superlative figures of 4/20. The leg-spinner was brought into the attack soon after the powerplay was over and the Sri Lankan spinner made an immediate impact by dismissing Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer for 13.
Hasaranga then struck twice off successive deliveries in his second over when he sent Sunil Narine (12) and Sheldon Jackson (0) packing with his variations. While Narine tried to up the ante by attempting a pressure release shot, only to be caught at point by Akash Deep. He then clean bowled Jackson with a googly and KKR were five down in nine overs.
Andre Russell hit some lusty blows and put on a display of his big-hitting prowess as the Jamaican swashbuckler played some big shots to release the pressure.
After Hasaranga's magic, it was time for Harshal Patel to display his control with the ball. The Purple Cap winner of the previous season dismissed Sam Billings for 12 in his first over and didn't concede any run.
Harshal returned in his second over and dismissed Russell after bowling four dot balls on the trot. Russell (25 off 18) slashed the scrambled-seam length ball outside off stump only to find a thick edge and Dinesh Karthik gobbled it. It was the second maiden over from Harshal. Before getting dismissed, Russell hit three maximums.
Southee was Hasaranga's fourth victim in the game. Umesh Yadav (18 off 12) played a decent cameo and it was his partnership of 27 runs for the last wicket with Varun Chakaravarthy who helped his team go past the 125-run mark.
FOUR! Andre Russell to Dinesh Karthik. Slower length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past long on for 4 runs. That's the game. Royal Challengers win by three wickets. After a top-order collapse, contributions from Willey, Rutherford and Shahbaz have helped them chase this target down. Knight riders bowlers tried hard to defend a below-par total but could not. Hasaranga has been adjudged Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul. Cheers.

On the fifth day of the 2022 season of the IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in a blockbuster clash at the DY Patil Stadium. The Faf du Plessis-led Challengers and Shreyas Iyer-led Knight Riders got their season off to contrasting starts.
While Iyer began his stint with the Knight Riders with a six-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings, du Plessis, put up a stellar show with the bat, but in vain as RCB lost their opener to Punjab Kings in a high-scoring encounter.
The two sides have played against each other 30 times in the IPL, and KKR have the edge in the head-to-head, having won on 17 occasions, while RCB have wo 13 so far.
For RCB, new skipper du Plessis was in scintillating form as he began his stint with the side with a smashing 57-ball 88 and he would look to continue in the same vein. Meanwhile, former skipper Virat Kohli, also performed with the willow and will look to pile on the runs without the added responsibility of captaincy on his head. The RCB top order put up a solid show and the KKR bowling unit will have their task cut out.
But the Challengers bowlers will have to pull up their socks, as the Knights ticked all the boxes in the opener against CSK. One of the biggest positives for the Kolkata team was new recruit Ajinkya Rahane who found his mojo. The Knights will most likely stick to their winning combination as we can expect another high-scoring encounter at the DY Patil Stadium.
