Hobart Hurricanes lifted their maiden Big Bash League (BBL) title with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder in the BBL 14 Final on Monday (January 27) at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
Mitchell Owen's scintillating 108 off 42 balls, including a record-equalling 11 sixes, powered the Hurricanes to chase down 183 in just 14.1 overs. Owen's explosive innings ensured Hobart's victory, securing the title in front of their home crowd.

Matthew Wade provided support with a quickfire 32 off 17 balls, while Ben McDermott (18 off 12) ensured there were no late hiccups. Earlier, the Thunder had posted 182/7, thanks to Jason Sangha's composed 67 off 42 balls and David Warner's 48 off 36 balls. Sam Billings (20) and Oliver Davies (26) offered brief support.
For Hobart, Nathan Ellis (3 for 23) and Riley Meredith (3 for 30) led the bowling attack to restrict Sydney’s total. Ellis, the Hurricanes’ captain, dismissed Warner and crucial middle-order batters, earning accolades for his leadership in Hobart’s breakthrough season.
The Hurricanes' chase was aggressive from the start, with Owen reaching his fifty in just 16 balls and ensuring the contest was decided before the halfway mark of the innings. His dismissal in the 11th over came with Hobart needing just 44 runs to win, which Wade and McDermott completed comfortably.
Sydney Thunder, aiming for their fourth BBL title, fell short despite dominating the initial stages of the match. Their middle-order struggled to capitalize on a strong start provided by Warner and Sangha, as consistent wickets derailed their innings.
Hobart Hurricanes' victory marked a historic moment, leaving Melbourne Stars as the only team yet to win a BBL title. Here's the Big Bash League 2024 full list of award winners, prize money, and stats:
