Border-Gavaskar Trophy Winners & Runners List

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a bilateral Test series played between India and Australia. The series which came into being in 1996-97 is named after former captains Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar. The Test series is being held after a gap of every two years either in Australia or India. India won three Border-Gavaskar Trophies i.e. in 2017, 2018-19, 2020-21 in a row.     The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 was held in India and the hosts ended up winning it by 2-1 margin. It was the fourth consecutive series win for India with the similar margin. This was the last time when the BGT will have four Tests. Team India won the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs. Rohit Sharma-led side won the second Test by 6 wickets in New Delhi. But the tourists came back strongly in the third Test under the leadership of stand-in captain Steve Smith, after regular skipper Pat Cummins went home due to personal reasons, and thrashed India by 9 wickets in Indore. With WTC Final spot on the line, Team India had to win the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad. However, the pitch at Motera was conducive for batting on all five days and the match ended in a draw. But India managed to qualify for the WTC Final after New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka at home in first Test, clearing way for an India vs Australia final in the WTC 2021-23 Cycle. Australian opener Usman Khawaja was the top run-scorer in the series with 333 runs under his name, including a ton. While premier India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the adjudged the player of the series for picking up the most wickets (25) in the four Tests.

    Indian cricket team arrived Australia for the second consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under and once again ended up winning it. After losing the first Test in Adelaide (a Pink-Ball Test) and facing the humiliation of routed for 36 in the second innings. India also were without the services of their batting mainstay and captain Virat Kohli for the remainder of the series. But under the leadership of acting-skipper Ajinkya Rahane, the young and spirited Indian side made a strong comeback to win the second Test at the iconic MCG. In the Sydney Test which followed, the Indians showed true grit and determination and forced the Aussies to settle with a draw. In the fourth and final Test played at 'fortress' Gabba in Brisbane, Indians chased down 329 runs in the final innings. Rishabh Pant scored an unbeaten 89 and India scripted history by winning the series 2-1.

    The 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy was held in Australia and Team India created history Down Under by winning the four-match Test series 2-1. Team India won the opening Test in Adelaide by 31 runs and lost the second Test in Perth by 146 runs. The third Test played at MCG was again won by the Indians as they took an unassailable lead. The fourth Test ended in a draw due to rain on Day 4 and 5. India thus created history by winning first-ever Test series on Australian soil.

    India hosted the next edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with Virat Kohli being the captain of the side. Aussies were led by Steve Smith and lost the series despite taking a 1-0 lead by winning the opening Test in Pune. India won the second Test in Bengaluru, drew third in Ranchi and clinched the series 2-1 in Dharamsala.

    The 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy was held in Australia and the hosts won the series 2-0. Virat Kohli lead India in the first and the fourth Test while MS Dhoni was the captained the Test side in the second and third Test. After helping India draw the third Test at the MCG, Dhoni announced is retirement from Tests. The series will be remembered for the plethora of runs scored by Kohli and Steven Smith.

    Team India avenged the series defeat in Australia by clean sweeping the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2012-13. The MS Dhoni-led side won the series 4-0 against the Aussies and it was their first clean sweep against the Australians in any format. R Ashwin was the player of the series for his bowling performance.

    Australia arrived in India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2008-09 and lost the series 2-0. Ponting's side failed to secure a single win in the series and lost the BGT trophy. Anil Kumble and MS Dhoni were the captains for India in this series. Legends - Kumble and Sourav Ganguly - retired from the game in this series. With the series win, MS Dhoni-era as India's Test captain began.

    India toured Australia in 2007-08 for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and ended up losing. Ricky Ponting-led Australia defeated Team India, led by Anil Kumble, 2-1. This series is also remembered for the controversies apart from the matches played. The infamous Monkeygate scandal and the controverisal umpiring decisions in the Sydney Test rocked the series and also soured the relations between the two teams. India, however, scripted history with their first-ever Test win at WACA in Perth.

    Australia won the 2004-05 Border Gavaskar Trophy under the captaincy of stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist. It was the only instance when the Australians won a Test series on the Indian soil. In the 4-match series, Australia defeated India 2-1 and created history. One match between the two teams ended in a draw.

    Having claimed the 2000 series at home, Sourav Ganguly's India faced a litmus test in 2003 when they arrived on the Aussie shores. It was the four-match series which ended in a 1-1 draw. The first Test at the iconic Gabba was drawn, India won the second Test in Adelaide, lost the third match in Melbourne and the fourth and final Test in Sydney ended in a draw but Team India managed to retain the trophy.

    At the start of the new millennia, the rivalries between India and Australia in Test cricket were renewed with one of the most exciting bilateral series played between the two teams in their history. A dominant Australian Test side arrived on Indian shores in February 2000 with a lot of promise under their inspirational captain Steve Waugh. India were being led by a new skipper in Sourav Ganguly and won the series 2-1. Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Harbhajan singh were the superstars for India in that series despite losing the opening Test in Mumbai by 10 wickets.

    The third season of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was hosted in Australia and it was the first time when the bilateral series was held Down Under. The Aussies laid their hands on the coveted trophy with a white wash of the Indians under the leadership of Steve Waugh. Sachin Tendulkar-led Indian side lost the series 0-3.

India were the hosts of the one-off Test series and finished as the winners of the first season of the bilateral Test series between the two countries.
